PURPOSE:
The Landscape/Maintenance Assistant is responsible for ensuring the care and upkeep of the Agency grounds and timely maintenance and repairs of the Agency facilities. This position meets on a regular basis with the Maintenance Supervisor to coordinate the care and upkeep of the agency grounds and timely maintenance needs of the Agency facilities. This position is responsible for meeting Head Start performance standards and following the Agency policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
I. LANDSCAPE AND GROUNDS
A. Maintain lawns, shrubbery and trees including planting, watering, trimming, mowing, edging, fertilizing, and applying weed and pest control.
B. Prepare areas for planting by clearing, grading and fertilizing and watering ground.
C. Install and assure the proper operation, maintenance and repair of in-ground sprinkler and drip systems.
D. Trim hedges and shrubs with shears or power edgers; prune and trim trees. Remove dead trees and plants using handsaws, chain saws and clippers.
E. Operate blower for cleaning sidewalk and drive way of gravel and small debris.
F. Keep grounds clear of readily visible litter.
G. Remove leaves as needed seasonally.
H. Maintain care and upkeep of equipment and tools.
I. Maintain work records as required.
J. Safely operate landscape vehicle, trailer and equipment.
II. MAINTENANCE SKILLS
A. Yard Maintenance
- Mow lawns, trim hedges and minor landscaping tasks.
B. Building Maintenance
- Available to do any and all minor fix-it jobs at the Agency facilities.
III. INTERACTION WITH CHILDREN, PARENTS, AND CO-WORKERS
A. Must relate in a positive, supportive and nurturing way, both verbally and physically, and be sensitive to the needs of children, parents and co-workers.
B. Must use quick, safe reactions and responses in dealing with children or situations that involve children.
IV. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY
A. Maintain a safe and pleasant work environment.
B. Follow safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
C. Actively contribute towards promoting a safe workplace/environment.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education : High school diploma or equivalent. Post high school or trade school education preferred.
Certification or Accreditation : None required.
Essential Skills : Minimum two years of landscape and general maintenance experience or combination of education and experience. Knowledge and competency in all areas of landscape maintenance. Basic computer knowledge.
Essential Mental Abilities : Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be organized and detail oriented. Ability to work as a team member and to be self-directed.
Essential Physical Requirements : Ability to frequently lift/carry up to 75 lbs a distance of 25 feet. Ability to frequently push/pull up to 100 lbs. a distance of 25 yards. Ability to occasionally climb and work from ladders/step stools, ability to occasionally work at heights up to 20 feet. Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and grounds/maintenance power equipment. Sufficient mobility, range of motion and stamina to frequently perform repetitive standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, reaching, squatting or kneeling, twisting and climbing for up to 8 hours per day. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Sufficient vision and hearing to perform job duties.
Exposure to Hazards : Hazardous chemicals, combustible substances, power tools/equipment, electricity, working from heights, high decibel noise levels, work with personal computer and driving and riding in a motor vehicle. Extreme hot and cold climates.
Working Conditions : Indoor and outdoor office and preschool centers, frequent local travel and occasional out of town travel.
EMPLOYMENT CONTINGENT UPON:
Pre-employment health screening as required by Agency and position (may include, but is not limited to: drug screening, occupational health screening and/or functional testing)
Central Background Registry enrollment
Valid Oregon Driver License
Proof of current personal automobile insurance in accordance with agency policy
Three (3) years DMV court print driving record
Approval to drive from Agency insurance carrier – requires at least 21 years of age
